Bias vs. Radial Tractor Tires: Which Should I Choose?

Both bias-ply and radial tires hold an important place in the agricultural tire market. While radial tires bring many important benefits to the farm, such as less soil compaction and more traction, there are a few reasons that bias tires continue to hold a share of the market. In order to make the best decision for your next farm tire purchase, you need to understand the differences between bias and radial tires and how their attributes affect their performance in the field (and on the road).

A radial tractor tire is designed as a two-part construction allowing the sidewall of the tire to flex independently of the face or tread area of the tire. A bias tractor tire is designed with a single ply wrapped diagonally from one side of the tire to the other. This means that as the tire flexes, the face or tread of the tire deforms leading to faster and more uneven wear.

AG TIRES/REAR TRACTOR TIRES

The rear tires on a tractor are typically R-1 tires, also known as Ag tires, which are designed for dry terrain. The type of rear tire you choose will affect the load power and soil compaction of your tractor. Some other things to consider when choosing tractor tires are Tread depth, Terrain, Construction, Tube vs. tubeless and Load index and speed symbols A number followed by a letter, such as "149A8", indicates the tire's load index and speed symbol. When matching front and rear tractor tires, most tractors are five-step tractors, meaning that the RCI group number of the rear tire is five higher than the front tire. If your tractor is 4WD, you must keep the same front to rear tire ratio.

RIBBED TIRES/FRONT TRACTOR TIRES

A front tractor tire is a tire on the smaller front wheels of a tractor that is used for steering and carrying the load of the front axle. The smaller front tires help improve the tractor's maneuverability and steering responsiveness, which is especially useful when planting, harvesting, or navigating around obstacles. One thing to consider when choosing front tractor tires is tread pattern. The tread pattern of a front tractor tire is important because it develops the force needed to steer the tractor. A deep rib pattern is common on 2WD steer tires to help engage the soil or paved surfaces.

IMPLEMENT TIRES/FLOATS

Implement tires are made for maximum soil reduction while withstanding heavy loads and extended wear. Farm implement tires spend most of their time in contact with the earth and carrying heavy loads. A good implement tire will deliver excellent traction in the field for lower fuel consumption.
